Another Year: film review

From Live For Films: Another Year: the title could be uttered with a weary sigh.

Not a damning judgement on Mike Leigh’s characteristically melancholic film, you understand. This is a brilliantly executed exploration of depression and loneliness and the limits to even the most admirably unconditional friendship.

Another Year follows middle-aged professionals Tom and Gerri (yes, like the cartoon) over a year’s four seasons in which they tend to both their allotment and their dysfunctional friends. More opaquely, the title could also encapsulate the persistent nature of people’s problems from year to year.
